Gloria Laura Vanderbilt was born in 1924 with the weight of one of America's most powerful surnames—and the strength to transform it into something entirely her own. A painter, writer, designer, and social icon of Manhattan's most exclusive neighborhood, she was already in international headlines at the age of ten for the custody battle between her mother and aunt. She emerged with a resilience that would shape everything she created.
In 1982, at the height of her fame, she decided to create her first perfume in collaboration with L'Oréal. To do so, she chose one of the most extraordinary noses of the twentieth century: Sophia Grojsman , fresh from the global success of White Linen for Estée Lauder.
Anderson Cooper , the famous CNN anchor, is Gloria Vanderbilt's son. When his mother died in 2019 at 95, many discovered the perfume for the first time—and rushed to find an original vintage bottle. Collector's prices skyrocketed within days.
Gloria had chosen the swan as her personal symbol years before the perfume. On the bottle, the swan embossed on the glass isn't decoration: it's the signature of a woman who knew exactly who she was.
Sophia Grojsman is one of the few perfumers to have developed an entire recognizable olfactory grammar. A Ukrainian emigrant to the United States, she spent her entire career at IFF, creating some of the most beloved fragrances of the 20th century: White Linen for Estée Lauder, Trésor for Lancôme, Eternity for Calvin Klein, and Paris for Yves Saint Laurent.

In 2000, the Vanderbilt formula was reformulated. Owners of both the original and current versions describe the two fragrances as substantially different: the modern one is flatter, less animalic, and the modern one is less profound.
