Futur was created in 1967 by Maison Robert Piguet in an attempt to relaunch a label that was suffering from the decline that had also been felt with the unsuccessful launch of Cravache in 1963, and was then discontinued in 1974. The couturier's closure of his boutiques in 1951 and his subsequent death in 1953 certainly contributed to the lack of success of the two fragrances. Cravache, a classic men's fougère, however, survived for a long time, while Futur, with its soft and dry base, was probably too modern to be understood by the women of the time.
The period is that of the space age, where clean, geometric shapes like Eero Aarnio's Ball-chair and new-generation plastic materials reign supreme in clothing and design. Women, along with Vidal Sassoon's boyish cuts, rediscover their independence and demand equality with men: we are just a step away from feminist struggles, and even fragrances are making a comeback with decidedly unisex herbs and woods.
Futur, reinterpreted through today's nose, certainly misses the mark, offering an aroma that's anything but futuristic. Despite incorporating elements of its time, such as the opening notes of green and hyacinth, in 1967 it must have still sounded contemporary yet classic, thanks to small, angular details contrasting with its smooth, glossy surface. So contemporary that it probably wouldn't be understood except today, where it might be sold as a niche men's fragrance.
